This past month, Project Healing Waters (South Florida)—in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment and the Vantage Point Foundation—hosted the “Backcountry Purple Heart/Disabled Veterans Slam II.” The two-day fishing venue was hosted for thirty wounded and disabled veterans, in order to assist in their medical recovery and rehabilitation.
Participants fished and enjoyed the beautiful Islamorada Everglades National Park with their comrades. They paired up with local professional guides, who treated them to an adventure on shallow water skiffs, sight casting and exploring the waters of the backcountry.
Capt. Benny Blanco offered his thoughts, and summed up the feelings of all the pro guides who volunteered and took the participants fishing during the event: “There is an unspoken healing power in this place… those who visit understand. Here I am, in a position to share that healing and peace with those who gave unselfishly to protect it… to protect us. How blessed are we?”
SeaDek was proud to sponsor the event for the third year in a row, providing the veterans with hats & t-shirts to wear at the event’s conclusion. It was a successful and happy weekend for the participants, and we were honored to have played a part.
